Notes

Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales, in its magnificent 1932 deluxe limited edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham, stands as an unparalleled visual masterpiece that beautifully united Denmark’s greatest storyteller with Britain’s preeminent fantasy artist. The volume compiles Andersen's most iconic and poignant narratives, including "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor’s New Clothes," and "The Snow Queen." Far from simple bedtime stories, Andersen’s tales delve into profound themes of unrequited love, spiritual transformation, social hypocrisy, and the beauty found in tragic self-sacrifice. Rackham’s artistic vision perfectly captured the delicate balance between the stories' whimsical charm and their underlying, melancholic gravity. His intricate illustrations breathe vivid life into these classic worlds, using his distinctive stylistic choices to ensure that the narratives resonate as powerfully with adult bibliophiles as they do with young readers.
The illustrator, Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), was the undisputed master of Great Britain’s "Golden Age of Illustration," and this 1932 project represented one of the final pieces in his legendary career. To fully immerse himself in the spirit of the text, Rackham traveled extensively through Denmark, meticulously sketching rustic Scandinavian architecture, gnarled forests, and local costumes to achieve absolute atmospheric authenticity. Published simultaneously in London by George G. Harrap & Co. and in Philadelphia by David McKay, this edition showcased Rackham at the absolute peak of his watercolor technique. By utilizing pioneering printing processes, the publisher faithfully reproduced his trademark aesthetic—a magnificent combination of sharp, sinuous pen-and-ink linework layered over delicate, muted watercolor washes. Rackham’s suite of 12 tipped-in color plates and 59 black-and-white drawings controversially bypassed standard cartoonish tropes, choosing instead to lean into a slightly eerie, deeply atmospheric, and texturally rich dreamscape that permanently altered the visual legacy of Andersen's mythology.
This edition was limited to a tight, numbered print run of exactly 525 copies for Great Britain (signed and numbered 1 to 525) and an additional 275 copies for the United States, this volume is no. 204 and is signed by Arthur Rackham himself.
