James, a builder and Adele, a promising artist, move to west Wales in the hope that a change of scene will help them come to terms with the death of their daughter. With their young son Sam they settle into a ramshackle farmhouse which James has been commissioned to repair. Its former occupants, they are appalled to discover, had fallen prey to drugs, madness and murder. While working, James digs up some very odd-looking bones. Sam has a fall and sees something which inexplicably links the present to the past. Adele's painting becomes stranger and stranger - and so does Adele. Finally, in the disastrous aftermath of supper with a neighbour, James decides to investigate the contents of the freezer...Cover art by Melvyn Grant.
