Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Or, three bars Vert, in chief a hurt fimbriated and charged with a Philippine sun of the first, and in base another fimbriated and charged with a fleur-de-lis of the like.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a Gold scroll inscribed "UNLEASHED LIGHTNING" in Green letters.

Symbolism
The colors yellow and green are those used for Armor.  The blue, representing water, symbolizes service overseas.  The green areas allude to the green fields of Europe and, with the fleur-de-lis, represent service in France during World War I and II; the yellow areas refer to combat service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 173d Tank Battalion on 15 September 1955.  It was redesignated for the 109th Armor Regiment on 6 October 1960.  The insignia was amended to change the symbolism on 30 September 1969.
