Capitol Reef National Park was established in 1971 to protect one of the most striking geologic features in the American West: the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long wrinkle in the earth’s crust. In addition to colorful cliffs, domes, canyons, and bridges, the park includes the historic Fruita district, where orchards planted by early settlers still flourish along the Fremont River.
The park’s landscapes range from desert lowlands and sandstone slickrock to pinyon-juniper woodland and higher elevations on the Boulder and Thousand Lake Mountain slopes. These varied habitats support wildlife such as desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, foxes, golden eagles, and many reptiles and songbirds. Capitol Reef National Park is located in south-central Utah.
