Description:
Born into a musical family in Nuremberg in 1564, Hassler was a talented keyboardist. He was the first German musician to be educated at a music school in Venice, Italy. In recent years, his motets and other vocal works have been widely known by conductor Philippe Herreweghe and others, but his organ and harpsichord works are less well known, perhaps because they were not published during his lifetime. The Italian organist Manuel Tomadin has stated that "Hassler is a most talented and respected organist." and has accomplished a major project by recording a large number of extensively unknown works. Using instruments suitable in the history of the Italian organ, this is a fascinating look into a church with a rich tradition. It is also a kind of gallery where one can get a sense of the history of Italian organ building. Hasler's work is a technically and colorfully sophisticated piece of new music for this period.
