Arnoncourt and Leonhardt spent 18 years from 1971 to 1989 to complete this collection of church cantatas. This was the first complete set of cantatas to be performed entirely by male voices, with the exception of a few soprano cantatas, in order to reproduce the style of performance at the time of composition, based on authentic historical research. The cantatas conducted by Arnoncourt were carefully selected to showcase the profound musical beauty of religious vocal works. This is the legacy of Nikolaus Arnoncourt, a master musician who has always been in search of the essence of music, including "the aesthetics of sound and expression, and the beauty of sound, ugly as it is beautiful.
